DIY Colored Sugar

Pretty huh? Do you know you can make it yourself? In two minutes flat?

It's one of those tips you read online that make you want to smack yourself on the forehead. Hard.

I have looked high and low for the right shade of pastel pink sugar for my vanilla raspberry cupcakes. And in Mumbai that involves walking up and down crowded streets in the blistering heat, searching for that tiny little 'hole-in-the-wall' store that stocks all things cupcake, only to be disappointed by the limited variety on hand.

So when I came across this DIY idea....I felt truly liberated! I may have said this about a recipe before but this one here is literally as easy as 1-2-3.

You need

I put the sugar in a bowl (any quantity will do). I then dipped a toothpick into my color of choice and sprinkled it over the sugar like this

I just mixed it in thoroughly with a fork first and then used my fingers to distribute the color evenly.

Add more sugar if you want to dilute the shade or add more color if you want a deeper shade. If you are using your fingers to mix the color, make sure you wash them before mixing the next shade!

Here's what I made :)

Spread the sugar out on a plate to dry for about an hour. Pour into airtight bottles to store and then bake a batch of cupcakes to go with these!
